It looks like Caroline will be exhibiting some of the photographs she took on our recent trip to India on the 12th of June 2009. The date is not finalised as of yet, but just please make a note of it.

The end of the exhibition is nearing and so far everything has been great. No one has heard anything from Caroline in the last few days, but I'm sure she is fine. I've been in bed for these last four days with some strange strain of Indian flu.

Here are some photographs that I took over the last couple of days on my trusty 2 megapixel cellphone camera. I thought that some people might be interested to see what things are like here in glorious Mumbai.

Greetings from a warm and humid Mumbai!

We are all still alive and well here on this side of the world. Caroline has disappeared in to the wild open space of India and is currently somewhere in the North of this beautiful country snapping away on her camera.

Just two days to go before our Mumbai exhibition. Things are hotting up here. Most of the big newspapers will attend the exhibition and Caroline has been booked for a couple of interviews on Saturday. One being a meeting with the South African ambassador.

Caroline arrived here in Mumbai early on Wednesday morning. She has informed me that she has already taken a few beautiful pictures here in Mumbai.

We are all staying at the YMCA (yes, the YMCA like in that one song, but be assured that there are no Village People look-a-likes running around here) in Mumbai Central. So far it has been great and the staff have been extremely forthcoming and friendly. The food has been great, but needless to say, in Mumbai, every day is a curry day. Below is a photograph of the dining room.

Eight days to go before the Caroline’s very first international exhibition. I’ve come out ahead of Caroline to finalize all the exhibition details and do some marketing.

My first impressions of Mumbai? It’s mindboggling massive and busy. Take Cape Town and multiple it by a hundred.

I’m staying in Mumbai Central, which I have been told, is one of the oldest parts of Mumbai. It is bursting from the seams with people and buildings. Being one of the oldest parts also means that it is one of the poorest parts and also that most buildings have not been maintained properly over the years. The place does however have its charms. After five or six o’clock in the evening things really come alive. Where and whenever in Mumbai there are always thousands of people around you, but after 5pm or 6pm they double. The streets are light up brightly by the lights from the stalls of traders. The energy in the air is intense and there is a sense of everlasting excitement.

I have visited the store where we will be exhibiting Caroline’s work, Hestia, and it is really beautiful. Her work will look beautiful in there.

More will be revealed on Monday! Caroline will be arriving in Mumbai on Tuesday. It looks like the exhibition has already drawn attention, with Caroline being invited to possibly meet with the South African ambassador once she is here.

India Here We Come - 33 days

Yes! We are going to India. Caroline will have her very first international exhibition ever in Mumbai. The exhibition starts on the 22nd of April and will be running until the 30th. Hestia will be hosting the exhibition. Hestia is a beautiful upmarket boutique furniture store that specializes in western furniture and is situated in downtown Mumbai.

National Geographic Traveller

In January 2009 National Geographic Traveller picked one of Caroline's photographs for their very first issue. We have just learned that they will once again feature one of her photographs in their next issue. Well done Caroline!

Her photograph will be used for an article about Venice, Italy.

Here at Galleria Gibello we have some very interesting "members of staff". Every now and then I'm going to feature one of them and ask them a simple question.

Today we are featuring Gaia. Gaia works in the Long Street gallery and comes from Milan (Italy). Today's question is:

"Out of all the places you have traveled to, which was your most favourite?"

Gaia answered:

"That is a difficult question to answer. My most favourite city must be Berlin. It is such a cosmopolitan city and the people are very friendly. There are lots of different artists. The art there is wonderful. I also like Greece. I love its nature life. Santorini is a very special place to me. London is also beautiful, but the weather is bad."

Turning in the Void

Last week I wrote about the Retail Therapy week that is happening at the moment in Cape Town. Together with this I also mentioned the Infecting the City festival that's also on right now.

Yesterday as I walked pass Riebeeck Square (between Bree and Buitengracht) I was privileged enough to witness the "Turning into the Void" act rehearse before their show. The show was presented by The French Institute of South Africa and Red Bull, designed and choreographed by Fabrice Guillot, and performed by Francisca Alvarez, Severine Bennevault and Olivia Cubero.

I didn't see the actual show, but it is described as "a vast animated sculpture suspended from a crane". The little bit of the rehearsal that I saw looked quite interesting and was a somewhat different visual experience to the hundreds of cars usually parked in the Riebeeck Square. I walked passed there just before 13h00. The show was due to start after three more or less. As those of you who live in Cape Town will know, we are currently experiencing a heat wave second to none. All I know, I was glad I wasn't one of those suspended dancers. God only knows who would want to be suspended 20 meters in the air on a 33 degree Celsius day!

Inspirational Monday Literature

Today we are going to start a new feature. Every once in a while we are going to explore the beauty of African inspired literature. This week we have a short piece written by Henry Beston about elephants.

Around the world in 14 months - Good luck!

One of the things that I love about Caroline's work is that it is very adventurous and passionate.

Talking about adventure and passion, yesterday we had the honour in meeting a young adventurer called Ziet. She is from Belgium and arrived in Cape Town yesterday. Yesterday, as we learned, was also the first day of a fourteen month long trip around the world.

She is going to explore Southern Africa for a month or so and then she is off to South America where she will meet up with another traveling friend.

Just before she left the gallery I asked her how her first day of this epic journey was turning out, she smiled nervously and said "so far so good".

All of the best to Ziet. She is going to experience what Galleria Gibello is all about first hand. Adventure, passion, mystery... and of course, traveling.

Retail Therapy - Cape Town Central City Sale

This years seems to be packed with action and events so far. The latest being the Cape Town Retail Therapy week starting on the 23rd of February lasting until the 28th. Galleria Gibello, as I've learned a few minutes ago, will proudly also be part of it all.

All participating retailers will be putting at least 5% of their stock on sale. Restaurants, hotels and other such establishments are encouraged to participate by providing specials to support the sale during this time.

I know for a fact that Caroline has already started with the sale giving a generous discount to some people that were here in the Bo Kaap gallery a bit earlier in the day. So, come and visit, you never know what might happen :-)

Coinciding with the Retail Therapy week there will also be a performance arts festival held in the CBD. It will aim to bring performances into public spaces and many of the performances will be free. Go have a look at their website (http://www.infectingthecity.com/) for more information.

All-in-all it looks like Cape Town is going to have a busy busy final week to the month of February.

National Geographic Traveller South Africa

This is somewhat old news but few people seem to be aware of it. In January 2009 National Geographic launched a South African version of their National Geographic Traveller magazine.

A dream of most photographers is to either be a photographer for National Geographic, or to have at least one of their photographs published in an edition. Well, one of Caroline's pictures appeared in the very first National Geographic Traveller South Africa magazine! Page 5, the article is called 48 Hours and is about Marakech. Photographed here is the Majorelle Garden.

Galleria Gibello Blog now Online

Hi there everyone

This blog will be about Galleria Gibello and all it's adventurous, sometimes mysterious, yet always passionate, happenings.

Firstly, Galleria Gibello is owned by the very eclictic and wonderful, Caroline Gibello. Caroline is a great and amazingly talented photographer. You can view some of her work on her private website, www.carolinegibello.com.

Secondly, as of February 2009, there are two galleries that proudly carry the name, Galleria Gibello. The flagship (or as I like to call it, the "Mothership") gallery is at 67 Rose Street, Bo Kaap, Cape Town, South Africa. The new gallery is just down the road is the very hip and happening Long Street. The address of the new gallery is 210 Long Street. It is part of the new 210onlong shopping centre. I will write something about the store in the next day or two.

Lastly, I hope to keep you up to date as much as possible about the happenings in the gallery. Sometimes things get pretty interesting...
